Hitherto: A Relaxed Handwritten Font

There I was, staring at a blank brand board, trying to find the right visual voice for a new client. The project was for a small, locally owned café that wanted something warm, inviting, and slightly informal. I knew the font would play a big role in setting the tone. That’s when I stumbled upon Hitherto.

As a designer, I often look for fonts that feel natural and easy to work with. Hitherto fits that perfectly. It has this casual, approachable vibe that feels like it was written by hand—something that can bring a human touch to any design. The curves are soft, the strokes vary just enough to keep things interesting, and there's a sense of movement that makes it feel alive.

I started by testing Hitherto on a logo draft. The first thing I noticed was how well it worked as a headline. It didn’t feel too ornate or overly stylized, which made it versatile for different applications. I tried it on a coffee cup mockup, and it looked great against a simple background. The font had enough personality to stand out without overpowering the rest of the design.

One of the things I love about Hitherto is how it adapts to different formats. Whether it’s a business card, a flyer, or a social media graphic, it maintains its charm. I used it for a poster promoting the café’s opening, and it added a friendly, welcoming feel that matched the brand’s identity. It also paired well with a clean sans serif for body text, creating a nice contrast without being jarring.

When working on packaging design, I found that Hitherto worked best as a display font. It was perfect for product labels and sticker designs, where a bit of flair can make a big difference. I also used it for a homepage hero section on the café’s website, where it caught the eye and set the right tone for the brand.

Readability was another key factor. Even though Hitherto is a handwritten font, it didn’t sacrifice clarity. It held up well in smaller sizes, making it suitable for short-form text like captions or taglines. This made it useful for a range of design elements, from Instagram posts to printed menus.

Testing Hitherto before using it in a full brand system was essential. I experimented with different weights and styles, checking how they performed across various materials. The font had a good range of alternates and ligatures, which gave me more control over the final look. I also checked multilingual support, which was important for the café’s international customers.

Font pairing was another area where Hitherto shone. I paired it with a classic serif font for a more traditional feel, and with a modern sans serif for a cleaner, more minimalist look. Each combination brought out different aspects of the font, showing its flexibility in different design contexts.

Commercial licensing was straightforward, which is always a relief when working on client projects. The file formats were standard, making it easy to integrate into different design workflows. I also appreciated the included styles, which gave me options for different applications without having to search for additional files.

For a creative studio or freelance designer, Hitherto is a valuable addition to the font library. It’s not just a pretty typeface—it’s a tool that can help shape the visual identity of a brand. Its relaxed nature makes it ideal for businesses that want to feel approachable and authentic, whether it’s a café, a boutique, or a handmade shop.

Using Hitherto in a branding project felt like finding the right voice for the client. It wasn’t too formal, but it still felt professional. It helped create a sense of consistency across all materials, from print to digital. And most importantly, it added a personal touch that made the brand feel more connected to its audience.

Whether you’re designing for a small business or a larger creative studio, Hitherto offers a unique blend of style and functionality. It’s a font that invites creativity, encourages experimentation, and brings a sense of warmth to every design it touches.

From the first mockup to the final brand materials, Hitherto proved to be a reliable and expressive choice. It’s a font that doesn’t just look good—it feels right. For any designer looking to add a touch of personality to their work, Hitherto is definitely worth considering.

It’s not just about the letters; it’s about the story they tell. And with Hitherto, that story is always engaging, inviting, and effortlessly stylish.
